The Space She Keeps
The Space She Keeps brings together Barbara Maxwell and Christine Wagner — two artists whose lifelong dedication to their practice is evident in the depth and confidence of their work.
Though distinct in approach, both artists create from a place of experience and intention. One offers layered stillness and quiet restraint; the other embraces movement and expressive abstraction. Together, their work reflects complexity, wisdom, and the evolving language of women who have committed their lives to art.

Artist Statement:
Barbara Maxwell- I am a graduate of Philadelphia College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. While at PCA I loved learning about drawing, painting and materials and techniques of painting. I was especially interested in color theory as taught by Edna Andrade.

In 1986 I moved to my home at the edge of the Pine Barrens. I began to focus on depictions of that unique landscape. I was not interested in “realistic” images. My paintings were informed by the more abstract work of Gustof Klimpt and Pierre Bonnard. I kept this quote by Manet tacked to my studio wall, “The two dimensional reality of the canvas should be respected. Brush strokes and color patches themselves and not what they stand for, are the artist’s primary reality.”
While making the paintings in this show I’ve felt free to take risks, experiment and push my own boundaries. Some are exercises in the simplification of forms seen in nature. The most recent, the “Grid” paintings are explorations of the abstract use of color and line to create the illusion of depth and natural light.
Christine Wagner- My art is a journey of spontaneity and intuition, where inspiration emerges organically from within. I approach my abstract work with no predetermined plan, letting the process unfold naturally. Initially, I make spontaneous marks and apply paint freely, allowing the piece to begin a dialogue with me. As the painting progresses, I react to what I see on the canvas or paper, embracing the negative spaces as crucial elements of the overall composition. During this creative process, many changes occur, and I welcome the unplanned little mishaps, often turning the work to discover new surprises I hadn’t noticed before. Essentially, I let the artwork dictate its own path.
When it comes to selecting subject matter, my approach is equally instinctive. I might choose a certain color combination, but I let the piece reveal its own direction throughout the process. It’s a continuous, spontaneous reaction to the evolving image.
My inspiration comes primarily from within, sometimes sparked by a dream. I am particularly drawn to light and the sun, constantly seeking the brightness of my work. The inner source of inspiration fuels my creativity and guides each piece to its completion.
In terms of technique, I don’t adhere to a rigid method. I apply marks with various tools at hand, such as markers, pencils and paint, and manipulate these elements using kitchen tools or whatever is available. This includes erasing, scraping and creating a semblance of chaos, which I then observe and balance to bring harmony to the painting. This organic manipulation of materials and the embrace of chance is what makes my art unique. Through this process, I strive to create works that resonate with an innate sense of discovery and balance.
